Ola Bench: Redefining Street Furniture with Eco-Design

Award-Winning Design by Diseño Neko

The Ola Bench, designed by Diseño Neko, is a revolutionary piece of street furniture that combines innovative design with eco-friendly materials. Inspired by the maritime and industrial history of Boston, this bench seamlessly blends into urban and natural surroundings, offering a variety of seating options within one elegant structure.

Originally designed for Fort Point in Boston, the Ola Bench symbolizes the harmony between man-made and natural elements. Its fluid lines resemble a body of water flowing above a bridge-like structure, creating a sense of tranquility and balance. Manufactured using powder-coated steel and recycled cast aluminum, the bench is not only highly durable and resistant to outdoor use, but also lightweight and visually appealing.

What sets the Ola Bench apart is its commitment to eco-design strategies. The materials used, such as recycled aluminum for the base and steel for the seat, were chosen for their recyclable properties. This bench is a testament to sustainable design, reducing its carbon footprint by being shipped in parts. Its bright and durable powder-coated finish ensures that it can withstand all weather conditions, making it ideal for any outdoor setting.

The realization of the Ola Bench involved meticulous craftsmanship and advanced technology. Each individual piece was modeled in a 3D CAD program to calculate the shape and curve, which were then laser-cut in steel. The strips were bent into shape and welded onto the ribs, following a template made of wood and metal. The feet of the bench were crafted using sand-cast recycled aluminum, derived from old engine pistons. The final touch was the powder coating, adding both aesthetic appeal and protection.

Measuring 1800 x 750 x 830mm, the Ola Bench offers a variety of seating options within one design. Its smooth lines and inviting form encourage users to sit and contemplate their surroundings. The bench's durability and suitability for all climates make it a versatile choice for both urban and natural environments.

The Ola Bench project began in December 2012 in Mexico City, with manufacturing taking place in Puebla, Mexico in March 2013. It was then shipped to Boston, USA in April 2013 and exhibited in Street Seats, a walking exhibition around Fort Point Channel, organized by Design Museum Boston from April to October 2013.

This exceptional design has received recognition and accolades, including the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category in 2014. This award is a testament to the Ola Bench's outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable artistic skill. It exemplifies excellence in design and evokes positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

The Ola Bench by Diseño Neko is a testament to the power of eco-design and its ability to transform street furniture into functional works of art. With its unique design, sustainable materials, and versatility, the Ola Bench is redefining the way we experience public spaces.
